I was really dissapointed to find out last week that the IT Suite in the Community Centre may not be with us much longer due to funding. This is a real shame as it is a great little place. I have been doing a family history course there with Lian for the past few months - the course has been fantastic - Lian is really knowledgable and I was really looking forward to using the centre for continuing support with my family tree once the course had finished. I really do hope the local community show their support to the IT Suite and the community centre as a whole, as I believe the community centre relies solely on funding from the local community - I always presumed it was funded by the council. I know there has been initiatives recently to try to raise funds for the centre, but I know I personally didn't realise how close to losing the IT Suite we were. We are really lucky to have something like this right on our doorsteps, it would be a real shame if it were to close down.

It is a great shame. The Community Centre including the IT Suite is a great resource for the people of Penmaenmawr. The Town Council over the last year have donated the Community Centre a substantial amount to pay the utility bills. It has also given some of the funds to ensure the new windows were fitted. wouldnt they make more money if one of the large rooms had gym equipment in it.....surely loads of people would pay to use it as it would be handy and that would help keep all the facilities there going.. :-)

There is a gym in Dwygyfylchi, i think having one in the center would affect it, would be a shame to get both competing against each other.
If the IT suite can get in touch with me, im sure we could do a project with Penmaenmawr website using the IT suite, maybe locals could have sections of the website to do with what they please and also set up courses with the website as a focus, like a community blog.
Also i think it would be a good idea to do a Community Ebay account, doing little taster courses on ebay and maybe charging locals one off fee for selling one off items on ebay so they dont have to have an account, another course ideas would be social sites such as facebook, forums with safety online and computer software maintenance such as virus protection and spybots.
I dont know if they do these courses already but if they do maybe a publicity campaign to get the locals to know about it.
I have lots of ideas but not qualified to run the courses but would like to help as class room assistant lol

I believe the community centre received a grant £3000c for the IT suite for the elderly September 09. This was made public on this forum - has this money been set aside for the specific purpose it was intended or just put in the "pot" and swallowed up

Not really Jeremy as you can go to a gym when its dark rather than get lost on a mountainside lol..... I was wondering actually if the centre should perhaps do more sports activities for children ages 5-10 as there isnt much for them to do in Pen particually for boys. I would have thought a karate class or something like that would be really popular as it appeals to both boys and girls and Im sure most parents would prefer not to travel to do activities but stay in the village.

I'm sure there is a karate class held there, the community center itself seems quite busy with the snooker and the big room upstairs, we always have to book it in advance, i think the original post is talking about the IT suite behind the center that's run aside the center.
I'm sure the money has been used correctly, IT suites can be expensive to run, you have to have staff to maintain it with proper qualifications and £3,000 is not going to cover the whole year.
No one has come forward with news about it so maybe it wont happen...i know with other community development projects.....you run projects like its your last month until the cash is in your hand......

Yeah thats right it is specifically the IT Suite I was refering to, however, if the community centre is struggling financially and the IT Suite goes, it could only be a matter of time before the whole thing goes. I like some of your ideas Emma I think the community really need to know its there and what happens there, I am guilty of only using the place recently but have really enjoyed the genealogy class. I still think there is a lot of people out there who could really get a lot of use out of the computers for beginners classes etc as there are a lot of people out there who are still frightened to death of technology and really must feel like they are getting left behind!

it is a real shame if the it suite does close ,having just completed two courses in the i t suite i cannot tell you how much it has helped me as a complete luddite lian has gently coaxed me into this centuary. i would also like to say how nice the windows look in the centre however, maybe a little more thought should have been given to the ongoing cleaning of them. frosted glass would have been better i think.
