Dear All,

My name is Jamie McNeill.  I am a final year undergraduate student of BSc Sustainable Development in Bangor University.

I am currently undertaking research into the bacterial loading of the bathing water zone at Penmaenmawr during this winter.  The Environment Agency perform monitoring of the same area during the summer, and my project aims to determine whether there is a significant difference between levels of bacteria between summer and winter in this area.

Some of you may have already seen me taking water samples from near to the ice cream stand.  I will be happy to publish the findings of my research on here for you to view.

It was good to see so many of you using the beach this morning whilst I was sampling.  Particular thanks go to the young gentleman who raised the barrier for me to exit - saved me getting out of the van to do it!

I look forwards to possibly meeting some of you next month.  I am hoping to gather your views on seasonality and beach use via means of a survey.  I will do this from a prominent point in the town.

I will let you know when this is to occur and if you are able to come and give your views I will be most appreciative.

Feel free to ask any questions.  Also hello to Emma who I met during the summer whilst studying SPSS with her.

Regards

Dear All,

I ask for your help.  As mentioned above I am in the process of gathering peoples opinions on beach use patterns.  I was wondering whether you would mind completing a survey for me.  Attached to this post are two surveys.

Siarad Cymraeg? Cwblhewch yr holiadur Cymraeg os gwelwch yn dda.
Speak English? Please complete the English survey.

Both surveys contain the same questions but have been translated.  Where possible please highlight the correct answer on MS Word and feel free to type over the lines in the response boxes.  Do not worry about losing the formatting!

I thank you for your help in advance.

Please could you either save and attach your completed questionnaire to this forum or alternative email it to me: tcu618@bangor.ac.uk.

PS:

Thought it would be worth mentioning how to do it for those who are unsure:

Click on the links for either Arolwg defyndd traeth or Beach Use Survey depending on your preferred response language.

A box will appear, click on "Open".  The Word document will open.  Complete the Q's.  Click "File" then "Save As".  Choose somewhere on your computer to save the file to such as "Desktop".  Then if you want to email it to me use your email program to attach and send it to me at the address above or using the forum, go into the message maker, to the left of the "Post" button click on "Additional Options" which will make the "Browse" button appear, click on this, find the file that you have just saved, click on "Ok" then "Post".

Thank you again for your help.

Do you check the Radioactivity levels in the water taken from Pen beach?
If you do are you allowed to publish the results with respect to permitted levels of Radioactivity?Jeremy

Hi Jeremy,

No I did not take a reading for radioactivity.  Can I ask why such a reading would interest you?  Is it something I should look into?

Thanks

Just general interest. The Irish Sea is supposed, how true it is I do not know,to have a higher than the average, whatever that means, Oceans radioactivity.
If it has it might just affect the Bacterial life forms which you are studying, and because of that would give a more complete basis on which to base your final conclusions.
The snag is if there is a much higher than normal radioactivity level and the figures are published,it could affect local tourism.Jeremy
