Hello

I'm interested in finding out about the Penmaenmawr Hotel (later re-named the Grand Hotel as I found out from this website).

I'm just curious as to whether anyone knows much about it? Is it still standing?

My great-great-great-grandfather is the Mr W Smith mentioned in this article on the website http://www.penmaenmawr.com/historyPantyAfonGents.html

His son, my great-great-grandfather, lived in Chester but died at the hotel in 1895.

To give you an idea of what it looked like there are usually a few postcards of the Grand on Ebay:- http://shop.ebay.co.uk/?_from=R40&_trksid=p3907.m38.l1313&_nkw=penmaenmawr+hotel&_sacat=See-All-Categories

My parents had their wedding reception there in 1956,  £27 for 40 guests, what a coincidence as I was only looking at the receipt  on Monday

The grounds were favourite scrumping territory, and was our adventure playground after the Saturday matinee.
A few of us went there in 1953 to spy on the girls practising their dancing.[ we were only 11 years old] As we peered through the curtains a hatch gave way and Micheal Pritchard fell into the cellar. he emerged more startled than hurt. It was the only occasion that I remember laughing so much I had an embarrassing damp patch. Such fond memories.

I remember walking round the outside of the Grand Hotel shortly before it was demolished. It was empty - a complete wreck, with overgrown gardens, boarded up windows, peeling paintwork and broken glass everywhere, yet it still retained just a touch of its former grandness. Time might be playing tricks on me but I'm sure I was able to walk straight into the once impressive hallway and have a quick look around.

I believe that in the years before closure it was used purely as bedsits for DSS tenants but perhaps a local resident can confirm or deny that? I think there was a lower building attached to the right of the main hotel that was used for functions/concerts etc, including a few local punk bands like 4Q in the 1980s as I recall, these concerts used to end in fighting on a regular basis!

It would be good to hear some stories from anyone who worked in the Grand Hotel or who went there in its final years, and even better some photos! :-)

Th old stables for the place are still there, now known as Time Factor Chemicals old offices. The Grand Hotel was supposed to have had a swimming pool in the basement filled with water from the sea, I don't know if it was heated or not!  It is a shame that Pen has lost such a building. Regards, Cllr. Ken Stevens.

was working fow watkin jones who developed the housing estate that now sits on the site of the grand.

Whilst we were doing the groundworks we dug up an old brick pumping station which I can only assume was feeding the swimming pool.

Marvellous piece of engineering.

Got some pics somewhere, I'll try and dig them out.

I remember old Watkin Jones himself !

He always wore yellow "spats" above his shoes, and demanded proper clean walkways around the site areas that he was visiting.....

God help the Foreman, if he got mud on his "spats"....

Can you imagine a building site without MUD Huh?

Or is the building further along Brynmor Terrace?
